The First Gig Since 2019
I had a strange Friday night! I did something that at one point in my life was commonplace… And of course, I'm talking about going to gigs. Yes, I managed to get myself out for the first live music performance since the dreaded lockdowns began and as such, I felt the need to blog about it. I had always wanted to blog whenever I went to a gig or a concert, but it kind of never really happened, let's hope we can change that.
I was clearly spoiled in 2021 because, in addition to going to a gig, I also drove and stayed with a friend (something else which felt a somewhat new occurrence despite it being previously a commonplace event)… It meant an early evening drive down to Worthing on the south coast of England… Now without getting my diary out, I lived down in Brighton for around a decade, a decade ago. Worthing (pretty much the next town along from Brighton) is a place of some fond and some not so fond memories for me, but it's also a place where my mate Les now lives and his band Mirrors of Madness are based, so these two things clearly make it now a renewed place of awesomeness.
“Mirrors Of Madness are rock alchemists, a band you can’t really pigeon hole into one genre and not known for any particular style – instead they craft songs that contain aspects of multiple rock genres with a mix of influences – each song has a very unique sound – from pop punk all the way to metal, the band love to mix it up so that every song is interesting and different from the last. The band formed in early 2018 as ‘Two-Tonne Vice’ from the ashes of some popular Southern UK bands – Atombuzz, Vertigate and Soulscream.”
It was my first visit to Bar 42 on Worthing’s seafront and I was impressed… The sound was spot on for what is a pretty small venue yet it could host a fair few people. It was great to see it packed out after so long without any live music or social interaction for us all.
Les and the Mirrors boys smashed it, I tried to get some photos and videos for the guys (some of which you can see above) which may be released by them soon if there was anything useful there the band thinks they can use.
I won’t lie, I did spend a lot of time outside post Mirrors talking to the band, after all, we had not spoken for an age in person. I would like to add that Vesture and Aren Drift were also awesome. I caught a fair bit of music from Aren during the soundcheck and was very impressed with their material, would love to visit again and check them both out in more detail once the venues are open on a more permanent basis.
